When I was growing up we spent a lot of time with our grandparents. My sister Rose who has autism, and is mostly nonverbal, spent a lot of time inside with our grandfather. They’d listen to music, and when she’d get anxious he’d rock her in his rocking chair until she calmed down.

I’d go outside and pretend to help our grandmother in the garden. She grew vegetables, flowers, and plants. I liked being around the birds and butterflies. I’d talk to them. A lot of my art reflects the time we spent with them.
